BIO | Benja Carreres, Bétera, Valencia, 1963
He is an industrial designer and has worked in R&D as a product engineer and expert in metal-mechanical processes, creating the first Spanish knee prosthesis. He has always been passionate about graphic design and has made many posters and logos. He has started a new creative cycle with the recycling of objects in a self-taught and intuitive way. Nowadays he continues materializing sculptural work in his way of learning and reflection.
The creative process starts with the casual encounter of a first object that I observe and reinterpret from another point of view, changing the function for which it was designed, playing with its geometric form and creating a new proposal of aesthetic composition that has a new identity. Then, in the workshop, I execute the assembly using all kinds of joint elements that allow me to make invisible adjustments and fixings without welding. This way, creatures, characters and artifacts emerge that are increasingly larger and more diverse.
On the other hand, I love to meet again with the forgotten wire and quickly sketch almost filiform figurative proposals that sometimes interact with the objects.
My vocation as an artist is born from the urgent need to change the environment by freeing the soul of those objects that are no longer useful, materializing works that transmit new metaphors and utopias. Only in this way, in their second life, will they be able to tell us new and better stories.
I am fully convinced that the alliance of creativity and recycling will lead us to a more sustainable (and possibly fairer) society. The recycling of the present will be the sustainability of the future.
